History of the Haverhill Community Violence Coalition
1999-2007
From 1996-2001, team members from Boston College School of Nursing, the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the University of Massachusetts Boston conducted a study of abuse during pregnancy under funding from the National Institute of Nursing, National Institutes of Health. The study objectives were to discover the incidence of abuse, the self-care taking by pregnant women, and pregnancy outcomes, comparing women screening positive for abuse and those denying any abuse. For this study, staff of the Hale Hospital Center for Women’s Health were major participants. From that project emerged the need for a community approach to address violence and, in particular, programming for children and teens exposed to violence.
